What Are The Causes?
Underneath the skin, fat cells and connective tissue are woven together. In women, they are arranged in a vertical pattern. If there is an excess of fat, those fat cells may protrude into the layer of skin above, which creates the dimpling we know of as cellulite. We do not know why some women are more susceptible than others, but we do know it is less common in men because their connective tissue is laid out in a crisscrossing structure, making it much less likely that excess fat will dimple out.
Should I Be Concerned About Signs of Cellulite?
You should only be concerned about cellulite if you are unhappy with its appearance or it makes you uncomfortable in some other way. This cosmetic concern poses no specific health risk, beyond perhaps the health risk of being overweight. Losing weight can help with cellulite, but it will not necessarily reduce it as much as you might hope.
