What is Heavy Menstrual Bleeding (HMB)?

Also known as menorrhagia, heavy menstrual bleeding refers to periods that are unusually heavy or last longer than normal, often interfering with your daily life. Menorrhagia signs may include:

  • Bleeding for more than 7 days
  • Soaking through a pad or tampon every hour (or more)
  • Needing to change protection during the night
  • Passing large blood clots
  • Feeling tired, weak, or developing anemia due to blood loss

HMB affects about 1 in 5 women and can disrupt work, social activities, and overall well-being.

What is Dysmenorrhea?

Dysmenorrhea refers to painful menstrual cramps caused by uterine contractions during your period. It often occurs alongside heavy bleeding and can range from mild discomfort to severe pain that interferes with daily activities. For some, it can impact both physical and mental health, leading to missed work or reduced productivity.

Why Treatment Matters

Heavy bleeding and painful cramps are common, but they shouldn’t be something you simply put up with. When left untreated, HMB can lead to ongoing fatigue, low iron levels, and anemia, making everyday life more difficult than it needs to be.

Why Choose Cerene

Cerene offers a modern, minimally invasive approach to treating heavy menstrual bleeding, designed with both patient comfort and long-term outcomes in mind. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • Simple, in-office procedure
  • Cerene is a self-contained system that can be performed right in the office without the need for large, complex equipment, making the process more convenient and accessible.

  • No general anesthesia required
  • Thanks to the natural numbing effect of cryotherapy, most patients do not need general anesthesia or heavy sedation during the procedure.

  • Comfortable and well-tolerated
  • Patients typically report low pain levels, high satisfaction, and minimal downtime, allowing for a quicker return to normal daily activities.

  • Maintains access to the uterus
  • Because cryotherapy has a different healing response compared to heat-based methods, Cerene tends to produce fewer intrauterine adhesions (scar tissue). This helps preserve access to the uterine cavity, which can be important for future evaluations if needed.

  • Proven, lasting results
  • Clinical data shows consistent effectiveness and safety over time, with long-term studies demonstrating durable outcomes and a low rate of follow-up surgical procedures.

Important Safety Information

Cerene® Cryotherapy is intended for premenopausal women with heavy menstrual bleeding who have completed childbearing. It should not be used in patients with suspected uterine cancer, endometrial hyperplasia, active pelvic infection, or an IUD in place.

Pregnancy after treatment can be dangerous, so effective contraception is required until menopause. Temporary side effects may include cramping, discharge, lightheadedness, or infection, and rare complications can occur.

What is The Cerene Treatment?

Cerene® Cryotherapy is an FDA-approved endometrial cryotherapy (cryoablation) device for treating HMB due to benign causes in premenopausal women who have completed childbearing. This minimally invasive, in-office procedure uses controlled freezing to remove the uterine lining (endometrium) in premenopausal women.

  • No hormones required
  • Short in-office procedure (approximately 15 minutes total)
  • No anesthesia needed
  • No incisions
  • Insurance-covered

Most patients tolerate the procedure well and may experience a significant reduction in heavy menstrual bleeding within 1 to 2 cycles. Clinical data, including findings from the CLARITY Study published on PubMed, demonstrate sustained results for up to 3 years in appropriate candidates.

Is Cerene Right for Me?

Cerene may be a good option if you experience heavy or prolonged menstrual bleeding that affects your daily life.

It is often recommended for patients who:

  • No longer want to have children
  • Have a normal uterine anatomy (no large submucosal fibroids, no uterine abnormalities that would impede treatment)
  • Have tried medical or hormonal therapies (or cannot tolerate them)
  • Do not have an active genital, urinary, or pelvic infection
  • Do not have an intrauterine device (IUD)
  • Do not have known or suspected uterine cancer or endometrial hyperplasia
  • Prefer a minimally invasive, in-office procedure
  • Have not found relief with medications
  • Are looking for a long-term solution without surgery

Patients for whom Cerene is contraindicated include those who:

  • Are pregnant or wish to become pregnant
  • Have uterine cancer or suspected malignancy
  • Have an active pelvic infection
  • Have an IUD in place
  • Have had prior endometrial ablation or uterine surgery that weakens the wall

During your consultation, one of our team members will review your symptoms, medical history, and goals to determine if Cerene is the right fit for you. For more information, visit the Cerene website or schedule a consultation with our New York gynecology team.

How Is the Cerene Procedure Performed?

The Cerene treatment is a quick, in-office procedure designed to be straightforward and minimally invasive. It is performed by your gynecology provider and typically does not require general anesthesia.
Here’s what the process looks like:

  • A small, specially designed Cerene device is gently inserted into the uterus
  • Once properly positioned, safety checks are completed to ensure correct placement
  • Controlled cryotherapy is then delivered for approximately 2.5 minutes, targeting the uterine lining
  • After treatment is complete, the device is carefully removed
  • The uterus then naturally begins its healing process

The entire procedure, from insertion to removal, usually takes about 15 minutes, with the full visit being short and efficient for most patients.

Patient Comfort During Cerene Treatment

According to Cerene clinical outcomes data, most patients tolerate the procedure very well, with discomfort during treatment generally described as mild and within an acceptable range. Any sensations experienced are typically brief and manageable during the short procedure.

By the following day, most patients report little to no discomfort, reflecting a quick and comfortable recovery experience in the majority of cases.

How Long Will the Treatment Take and When Can I Return to My Normal Daily Activities?

The Cerene procedure is designed to be quick and convenient. The treatment is typically completed within 15 minutes, with the active therapy lasting approximately 2.5 minutes.

Most patients are discharged shortly after the procedure and can usually return to normal daily activities within about 24 hours, depending on how they feel. Some temporary cramping and watery or light vaginal discharge may occur as the uterus heals, and this can last for a few weeks.

Most patients begin to notice improvements in heavy bleeding and cramping within the following few months as the body responds to treatment. It is important to continue using effective contraception until menopause, as pregnancy after endometrial ablation can carry serious risks.

Possible Side Effects of Cerene Treatment

Cerene is generally well tolerated, but like any medical procedure, some temporary side effects can occur as your body heals.

Most common short-term effects may include:

  • Mild uterine cramping after the procedure
  • Watery or light vaginal discharge that can last for a few weeks
  • Mild bloating or pelvic discomfort during the early healing period
  • Temporary lightheadedness in some patients

Less commonly, patients may experience:

  • Vaginal infection
  • Increased or prolonged discomfort that should be evaluated by a provider

These effects are usually temporary and improve as the uterus heals.

It is important to contact your provider right away if you notice:

  • Heavy or persistent bleeding
  • Fever or chills
  • Foul-smelling vaginal discharge
  • Severe or worsening pelvic pain

Our team will guide you through recovery and make sure any symptoms are properly evaluated if needed.
