What Are Uterine Fibroids?
Uterine fibroids, also called myomas, are benign growths that form in or on the uterus. They’re a common cause of abnormal uterine bleeding. In rare cases, they contribute to pelvic organ prolapse. These fibroids are created from the muscle tissue of your uterus and differ in size and number. Often, uterine fibroids are confused with ovarian fibroid cysts, which are sacs filled with fluid that develop in the ovaries, not the uterus.
Uterine fibroids can develop in different parts of the uterus, such as:
- Within the muscular wall of your uterus
- The outer wall of your uterus
- The cavity of the uterus, which worsens your premenstrual syndrome.
Sometimes uterine fibroids are so small that your doctor can’t even see them; others can grow into large masses that impact your uterus and fertility. This is why it’s important to visit an experienced fibroids doctor immediately if you’re at risk. Cohen Medical Practice (CMP) in Midtown NYC is a practice led by Dr Felix Cohen, specializing in reproductive services.
What Are the Causes?
While it is impossible to predict who will develop fibroids and when; we know that they are caused by an excess of estrogen and progesterone secretion. There are a variety of genetic and hormonal factors that may lead to fibroid growth. Risk factors include pregnancy, being overweight, and being over the age of 30.
What Are the Symptoms?
You may first notice fibroids if you are experiencing lower back or pelvic pain. Other symptoms may include abnormal or longer than normal periods, an increase in urination, and heavier bleeding. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, we recommend you schedule an appointment with Cohen Medical Practice immediately for a consultation and possible diagnostic hysteroscopy.
How Do We Address Fibroids?
The main way to treat fibroids is through a hysteroscopy. First, a diagnostic hysteroscopy determines whether or not you have them. This is simply inserting a very thin tube called a hysteroscope into the vagina to examine the cervix and uterus for fibroids. Then, if fibroids are discovered, an operative hysteroscopy can remove them. At Cohen Medical Practice, we offer a procedure called the MyoSure® Minimally Invasive Myomectomy. This is a very simple hysteroscopic removal procedure that can be performed in as little as 20 minutes.
Can I Prevent Uterine Fibroids?
Researchers are still working to study the causes of fibroids, which may help in preventing fibroids completely. With a balanced diet and regular exercise, you may be able to reduce the risk of getting uterine fibroids. Reduce alcohol use, get regular check-ups and use birth-control pills under the supervision of your doctor to reduce their growth.
If you’re going through uterine pain or any type of fibroid complication, contact Cohen Medical Practice immediately to improve your reproductive health and stop uterine pain.
