LEEP Colposcopy

The best method for fighting cervical cancer is early detection. While it’s true that the body can experience discomfort from time to time, ignoring certain warning signs can lead to disaster further down the line. Pelvic pain, discharge, and discomfort can be signs of abnormal tissue growth. If you’ve noticed these problems, our team at Cohen Medical Practice can help. One of our specialties is the Loop Electrosurgical Excision Procedure or LEEP Colposcopy. This treatment allows us to remove dangerous tissue without extensive surgery.

What Is a LEEP Colposcopy?

A LEEP Colposcopy is a very safe operation that involves the insertion of a wire loop into the vaginal tract. Once inserted, this loop gently heats up via an electric current, removing abnormal tissue for testing. The current passes through the loop, separating a thin layer of tissue which we then extract and submit to laboratory analysis. Once we receive results from this procedure, we can then determine the best treatment course for you.

What Does a LEEP Colposcopy Address?

This procedure is commonly done following a PAP test and colposcopy biopsy. If these tests show abnormal results, LEEP may be used to remove the cancerous tissue from the cervix and perform additional tests. The main benefit of choosing this technique over traditional surgery is that it carries a lesser risk of complications.

How Does This Treatment Work?

The LEEP procedure is performed under local anesthesia and begins much like a regular pelvic exam. Though you will remain awake throughout the procedure, you should feel only minor discomfort at most. During the treatment, a speculum will be inserted into the vagina and opened so that the cervix can be seen. A loop is then passed across the cervix, cutting away a layer of surface tissue and removing the abnormal cells. Sometimes a second loop may be necessary to remove tissue higher up the cervix. This entire procedure takes 10-20 minutes to perform.

What Results Can I Expect?

Following the procedure, you may experience some vaginal spotting for 1-3 weeks. Excessive activity such as exercise should be avoided for 48 hours and you should refrain from sex for four weeks. After removing the abnormal tissue, we will perform diagnostic tests to determine the extent of cancer. We will contact you as soon as we have more information about your condition.
